Project Overview

MOVE Malta is an eco-friendly, accessible, and reliable transport solution designed during a 24-hour hackathon design sprint. The project tackled Malta’s pressing issue of overreliance on private cars and underutilized public transport by proposing a tram-bus hybrid system supported by a digital mobility app.

The Challenge
  1. 84.3% of trips in Malta are made by private car
  2. Only 5.2% of trips are made by bus
  3. Accessibility barriers and environmental concerns
  4. Gaps in infrastructure and behavioral resistance to change
Problem statement
"How might we design a reliable and accessible tram-bus hybrid system for Maltese commuters, tourists, and individuals with mobility challenges in order toreduce car dependency, ease traffic congestion, and promote sustainable,eco-friendly travel across the island?"
The Solution
Hybrid Tram-Bus System
  1. Dedicated lanes with priority signals
  2. High-capacity electric/hybrid vehicles
  3. Accessible, strategically placed stops
Tram-Bus Solution
Digital Mobility App
  1. Real-time tracking & service disruption alerts
  2. Smart ticketing with contactless payments
  3. Crowd management (real-time occupancy)
  4. Multi-modal trip planning with accessibility features
Mobile App
Development Approach
  1. Design Sprint Methodology over 24 hours
  2. Mentorship from 3 mobility and design experts
  3. Collaborative Prototyping using Figma (Mid-fidelity prototype developed within the sprint)
User Flow
Budget & Timeline
  • Budget Consideration: €9–11 million for infrastructure, €6 million for vehicles, plus digital and marketing costs
  • Timeline: 4 phases over 36 months (Pilot → Testing → Expansion → Full-scale launch)
Outcome & Recognition
  1. Proposed a scalable, eco-friendly mobility ecosystem for Malta
  2. Delivered a prototype + roadmap within 24 hours
  3. Winning project of the Valletta Design Cluster Hackathon
